Getting out of the house

At 10:30AM I find myself sitting at the computer mindlessly checking social media, reading through blogs, and checking email even though in the back of my mind I know I need to get out the door.  I need to go to the gym and I planned a walk in a local botanical garden that I’ve never been to even though it’s a 5 minute drive from my apartment.


I started writing a post this morning because I finally told myself if I wanted to sit here I should be writing but after a couple sentences I realized I didn’t feel like writing and truly did need to get out the house for a little bit.  I was once again struggling to get myself motivated this morning.  It was like I was arguing with myself because I kept trying to come up with excuses to stay home but I had valid arguments against staying home.

I tried to convince myself I was going to clean the apartment today.  I tried to convince myself I needed to work on my photo portfolio.  I tried to convince myself it was too windy.  I tried everything to avoid getting out today but ultimately knew I would feel better if I had a good workout and walk today. I was going to skip the gym (I know I say this all the time) but I didn’t, went in for a quick strength training session and then I was out the door for a long walk.

I live near the University of Idaho, which has a beautiful arboretum and botanical garden.  We can add this to the list of places I can’t believe I’ve never visited.  It’s a quick drive and has 3 miles worth of trails to walk plus the amazing scenery.  I will probably be walking this 2-3 times a week if not more because it was so relaxing plus had a few challenging parts.  I still find myself getting winded climbing up hills so I keep challenging myself to climb more hills.  A few times I thought I couldn’t make it but was always pleasantly surprised when I did make it to the top.

The climbs and varying terrains are more work out than walking on the treadmill but he biggest benefit is being outside.  I’ve always thought of myself as more of an indoors kind of girl but the more I hike and explore the more I realize I genuinely enjoy being out in nature (as long as they’re aren’t too many bugs 😉 ).  I’m regretful for the adventures I’ve waited so long to experience but proud of myself for finally getting out of my rut and exploring the world around me.

The Tuesday Edition of Meal Plan Monday

My intentions were to write my meal plan last night because I can usually multitask with no problems.  I figured I would write it out while I watched Grey’s Anatomy, unfortunately any loyal Grey’s fans would know I couldn’t have done anything else while watching the latest episodes because I couldn’t see through my tears.  I won’t spoil anything for anyone but I will say it was miserably sad and had me talking to my TV because I couldn’t believe what was happening.

I’m still bothered by it (funny how attached we become to fictional characters) but I’ll survive so onto the meal plan for the week.

I’m tightening the reigns on the budge right now so I’m really having to enlist some skills to stay in the healthy and cheap range.  I spent about $50 on groceries but I’m hoping other than maybe $10-15 for fruit, veggies, and eggs (got home and realized I only had 1 left, the downfall of not making a good list) this will get me by for the next couple weeks.

I’m going to make the ground beef tofu again and try it in spaghetti.  I bought a couple packs of tofu because it’s cheap and lasts a long time plus one pack will make 2-3 meals.  I had chicken breasts in the freezer so I can cook those up to create a couple days worth of meals.  I bought a couple portobello mushrooms this morning so I need to cook them within the next day or two, not sure what I’m going to do but I’ll figure it out.

Simple meals with lots of fruit for snacking.  I bought a cantaloupe so I need to cut that up in the next day or so.  I’m more likely to eat it if it’s ready to go in the fridge.  I also picked up some yogurt, don’t know if it’s the warmer weather but I’ve been craving yogurt.  It’s one of those foods I will eat constantly then I’ll buy some I end up throwing away because I lose interest in it but I’m into it right now so I’m stocking up.  It’ll probably be my go-to after gym snack.

Workout Plan & Outdoor Cardio

I was back in the gym today and it felt good.  I’m reaching that wonderful place of complete comfort with the gym.  I feel less intimidated walking into the weight room even if it’s full of people.  I had a minor struggle to get going this morning but I think part of that is just because I haven’t been in almost a week.  I almost convinced myself I didn’t need to go but I know that not going today would potentially translate into not going all week so I dragged my sorry self out of bed.

I wrote out some exercises to do for the week and my goal is to make it into the gym at least 4 days this week.  The routine I did today only took about 30 minutes and the other one I planned will take less time.  My goal is really to limit my time at the gym when the weather is nice and do more outdoor activities.

Today I did 3 sets of 10 of the following:

TRX rows
TRX squats

Lateral pulldown (up to 50lbs this week)
Seated calf raises (adding weight next week)

Kettle bell high pulls (15lbs)
Leg press (140lbs)

Standing shoulder press (8lbs)
Leg Curl (50lbs)

I’ll do that routine again on Thursday

Tomorrow and Friday-Lighter days with more cardio.

Complex shoulder raises
Squats

Cable bicep curl
Tricep rope extensions

Chest press
Leg extension

I’m also going to add in some floor work each day.

Hip lifts, leg switches, ankle touches, crunches

Plus I want to try some of these love handle exercises from Jordyn Ashley at My Goodness so I think I’m going to pick 5 of these exercises and plan to do this at least once this week.

As I mentioned above, whenever possible I’m taking cardio outside.  Today I almost jumped on the treadmill then found myself walking out the door.  I really can’t justify walking on a treadmill when the skies are free of clouds, clear blue, and the sun is shining brightly.

I left my car and took a walk around the neighborhood by the gym.  It was nice because I’m not very familiar with the area, it was a beautiful day, and the area has some challenging hills.  I walked up toward a hill and thought I couldn’t make it but I realize the only way I’ll improve is to keep pushing myself to do what I don’t think I can do (I made it! 😀 ).

I’m finally starting to see some weight loss so I’m going to try to do a bit more this week with strength training 4 days.  I was going to do 5 but I’m taking Saturday off because I’m taking pictures at the Renaissance Fair here in town for a magazine. In the continued pursuit of an active lifestyle I actually planned it so a friend and I can walk to the fair instead of driving.  It’s actually a win-win because there’s not much parking in the area and it’ll help me get in a couple miles of walking.

I’m sad because my FitBit battery died over the weekend and I forgot the charger but I know I did pretty good over the weekend.  A few lazy mornings and a day at the casino but also a hike and a couple nice walks.

I’ll have some posts and pics about my weekend plus my weekly meal plan but right now it’s lunch time and then I might have to take another quick walk.  It’s almost torture sitting here in my office looking out the window at the blue skies so I might have to run out to enjoy them a bit more 😎
