My First 10K

Leading up to the event this weekend I was questioning my sanity.  I was thinking I wasn’t prepared, that I wouldn’t be able to finish, that I would be the last person to finish, basically I was talking myself out of it.

A couple days before I was even thinking of switching to the 5K because I know I can do a 5K with no problems.  Let’s just say I’m glad I pushed myself and went through with the 10K.  For those who don’t know, a 5K is 3.1 miles, 10K is 6.2 miles, half marathon is 13.1.

I’m doing another 10K in April but I don’t think I’m to the point where I’m ready for a half marathon yet…my brother might have been right that it requires some training.  I’ve been trying to increase my walking distances and speed but haven’t been doing any official training.

I finished in under 2 hours, 1:46:07, which was one of my primary goals.  Below is my friend Denise and I rocking our racing tutus (I made that tutu), hoodies, and light up medals after the race.

My pace right now seems to be sitting around 17:00 per mile so my next goal is to shave 30 seconds off that time.

I think I’m getting close because my walking speed on the treadmill at the gym is going up as the feeling like I’m going to die from walking so fast goes down.  When I first started a 3.0 mph was my fast pace, now it’s around 3.7 mph, inching closer to that 4.0 mph goal.

I’m exceedingly proud of myself for completing it and can’t wait for the next one.  I love knowing the times because it gives me a goal for the next time, working on my next PR (now that I’m in the game I know that means personal record).  My next 10K I would like to be around 90 minutes but anything faster than my last time is improvement.

I’m completely hooked!

Actually, I knew I was hooked from my first medal and now I have races planned for almost every month this year, just looking for ones for July, September, November, and December.  Coming up are the fun ones, Bubble Run, Color Run, Margarita Madness, Comicon 5K….and I just realized December might be taking me back to my first race for the second year 🙂

That’s all I have for now.  I skipped meal plans this week so I’m eating horribly but I’m back on track tomorrow morning and will be making meal plans over the weekend for the next couple weeks.  I have a long holiday weekend so I’m hoping to catch up on stuff at home, which includes writing.

I wanted to say real quick I took on a One Change Challenge from Angela over at Keen Peach.  I love her idea of taking on one change for one week every month rather than trying to overhaul your entire life in one go.

My change was to start stretching every day and I’ve been pretty consistent with it, definitely a good change for me to add into my life right now.  The stretching seems to be helping reduce any soreness with all the miles I’m walking every week.  It’s more of a nightly habit but going into next week I’m going to be setting the alarm a few minutes earlier so I can stretch in the morning.

Have a great Wednesday night!  I’ll be back writing again soon!

Hello :)

I did my first 5K of the year last weekend and I was pretty happy with my time.

I came in at 50:19.  My last 5K in December was 55:23  so I’ve definitely made some improvements in my time and my goal for the first half of this year is to be able to do a 15:00 mile.

I’m putting in plenty of miles each days but I’m struggling to find balance right now.  It’s sometimes difficult to know the difference between pushing yourself to do more and pushing yourself too much.  I only made it to the gym 3 days this week but I did hit my 11,000 step goal every day of the week.

cheering_minionsHave I mentioned how much having support helps?  It’s been amazing to find coworkers and friends who are also interested in getting healthy.

I have people to walk with, people who encourage me to go to the gym, people who find runs for us to participate in, people who encourage bringing lunches instead of eating out, etc, etc.

They encourage me to get moving on days when I feel more Carrie than Charlotte or Miranda….

It makes a HUGE difference.  Even though they might never see this post I’ll say thank you to them anyways because their support is amazing!

In other news….

I didn’t win the Biggest Loser challenge at work

Actually I wasn’t too heart broken.  I knew I hadn’t lost much weight.

The woman who won is one of my walking buddies but she walks about 5 miles more per week than I do…she’s a machine.  Some people were surprised because walking is all she does for exercise but she’s also doing the whole 30 right now and I think people forget how much food plays a role in weight loss.

Speaking of food….I did both good and bad this week but I know I need to get back to meal prepping.  Going to the gym for at least an hour every night means I might not get home until 6:30, and I’m typically exhausted so trying to think of what I want to make for dinner takes too much effort.

Thankfully I have tons of healthy food on hand but I’ll gravitate to the easiest option.  One night it was chips and hummus….not exactly a complete meal.  I will have meal plans up this week.  I’m not allowed to spend any money this week so I’ll be working with whatever I have on hand but the truth is I have tons of food on hand and there is no need for me to grocery shop this week.

My feet and legs are aching so I’m going to have a no working out day.  I plan to go to the gym tomorrow for a little bit in the morning or if it’s not pouring down rain maybe walk over to see a movie.

I’m going to maybe soak my feet for a bit, put on some fluffy socks, and kick back to catch up on movies or binge watch a TV show….or nap all day 😉  We’ll see how it goes, basically the plan is recuperation.

Rest Day

I almost called in sick today but wasn’t really feeling sick enough to call in sick, just kind of….not really feeling it today…..so I went into work and left early.  I was exhausted for some reason so I decided to listen to my body and take a rest day but it was challenging.

Even as I left work I contemplated going to the gym for a quick mile or two then decided a better option would be to get home, put my feet up, get some ice on my aching ankles, take some ibuprofen, and rest.  That’s what I’ve been trying to do today but I keep thinking about how I can’t wait to get back to the gym tomorrow.

I’m so excited because I had my best mile time yesterday.  The problem is I also have a little voice in my head telling me it’s not that impressive.  I’m still super slow but I have to keep reminding myself that my times are all about me.  All about my goals and the little accomplishments along the way.  It’s so easy to think what you’ve accomplished isn’t good enough compared to other people.

I guess the point I make by writing what keeps popping into my head is to not compare yourself to everyone around you.

Work at your own pace.  Set your own goals.  Crush your goals.

Most importantly:  Celebrate your success along the way!

Here is my little bit of success……I jogged/walked my fastest mile to date, 17:46!  I’m slowly working my way to my 15 minute mile goal.  I’ve been walking more than jogging but yesterday was more jogging.

I think I’m extra excited because it felt good.  I felt like I found a groove or a rhythm, like I began to understand why people like running so much.  I’m also helped by an amazing support group at work who proceeded to high five me and tell me I did a good job when I meekly said, “I jogged almost an entire mile yesterday.”  They help keep me motivated.

I’ll be back in the gym tomorrow and Friday then maybe a short walk/jog on Saturday.  I have a 5K on Sunday so I’m trying not to overdo it too much but also want to keep myself moving.

I’ve decided on 4 days a week at the gym, one rest day during the work week, an active weekend day, and a rest day on the weekend, basically 5 days on, 2 days off.  Not that I’ll be laying on the couch during my rest days but won’t be as focused on getting a work out in on those days….unless I really feel like it.

I’m going to see if this little runners’ high carries over into the upcoming weeks, and if so I’m going to be shopping for some new shoes.

That’s all for now.  I’m off to lounge a bit more before my early bed time tonight.  Hope the week is treating everyone well!  We’re almost to the weekend!  🙂
