Working Wardrobe Wednesday

Today the day was gray, cloudy, and rainy.  I decided what would go best with gloomy, gray weather is a comfy flannel shirt.  Not to stereotype too much but it’s like the uniform of the Pacific Northwest XD  It might be about a size too big but I actually got compliments on it so it must not have looked too awful.  Next time I hope I can wear it with a vest I plan to purchase.  Remember last year when I tried on a vest that made me look like a marshmallow, well I found one with less fluff last week so that will soon be part of my regular wardrobe.   FullSizeRender (33)

Skinny jeans and boots round out this fall uniform.  It was comfy, warm, and perfect for a rainy day.  I will point out that I’m lucky to be in an office with a very relaxed dress code best described as business casual, heavy on the casual.

I wore a blue tank top underneath, kept it a bit unbuttoned, and rolled up the sleeves so it looked more feminine, less lumberjack 😉

I find myself wanting very badly to go shopping but like I said yesterday in Meal Plan Monday I’m trying to budget and save for things I really want.  This includes clothes.  I’m choosing to shop around and plan the pieces I want to buy rather than impulse buying a bunch of clothes.

Monday I initially put on a pink shirt, light cardigan and the pink/orange necklace but it just didn’t work for me.  It was a bit too bright so I found a plan tee with some flecks of pink in it so I could still wear the necklace and went with the black cardigan.  I think it’s fun to dress up a plain tee with a fun necklace, adds some personality. I wore this with jeans and flats but it could easily work with slacks and heels.  Going back to my desire to shop, every time I think I need new clothes I manage to dig something out of my closet I’ve never worn to work.  I realize I don’t need new clothes I need to keep a better inventory of what I already have in my closet.  There’s probably two or three wardrobes sitting in my closet right now so hopefully I can keep adding variety.

The last outfit is a shirt I bought then didn’t wear for a long time.  I bought it on clearance at Old Navy and actually think it’s a maternity shirt but it’s comfortable and looks dressy.  The shirt is long enough so I can wear it with leggings and boots so it’s almost like a shirt dress.  I’ve worn it with a white long sleeved shirt underneath and it really changes up the look but it was kind of warm so I went with just a cami.  One of my favorite parts of this shirt is the pockets!

That’s what I got for this week.  I’m hoping to get back to making this post a regular feature but we’ll see how it goes.  Many of my mornings last week I felt like I barely had time to get dressed much less take pictures of my outfits but I’m back to organized this week and even planned out my outfits for the next few days.

Hope everyone is enjoying the week.  I’ve been struggling this week but it’s the week that happens every month when I think I’m going to die so I’ll get through it but I’m really looking forward to Friday.

Working Wardrobe Wednesday…on Thursday

I was dealing with payday drama the last couple days so I neglected writing my Wednesday post but all is well now so it’s back to writing.

I’m not sure if I’ll be able to keep up enough content for this idea but I’ll keep it going while I still feel like doing it.  This week I had two outfits I really loved and I’m finding more pieces to add to my working wardrobe.

FullSizeRender (17) First was the gray pants witFullSizeRender (22)h plain white shirt, purple sweater, and sparkly shoes!  I woke up not feeling very well this day so I forced myself to dress up in the hopes that feeling good in my clothes would somehow make me feel better.

I was still really tired but I think dressing up a bit helped me feel better.  I’m obsessed with these gray pants because they look dressy and professional but feel like pajama pants.  Some of my favorite pieces are the ones that look really dressy but are super comfy.  I don’t think fashion has to be uncomfortable.

I sometimes worry the sparkly shoes are too much but wearing them with a simple outfit gives the outfit a little bit of interest without looking like I’m wearing children’s pretty princess dress up shoes.  I truly believe in the less is more philosophy.  I have a few items I consider statement pieces so I try to pair them with simple looks to make them stand out.  Sparkly shoes with a sparkly dress and lots of jewelry would be too much for me.  FullSizeRender (18)I wish I’d taken a picture of them in the sun.  They’re really beautiful in the sun.  I wasn’t sure if I was in love when I bought them over a year ago but I find I wear them all the time.  As I said they’re fun to add a little pizzazz to what might be a plain outfit.
This next one is not the greatest picture.  I look like I ruffled my hair then took the pictures…..taking pictures after I fixed my hair would’ve been a better idea but this is the best of the worst.

I almost got rid of this sweater at one point but something made me hang onto it and I’m glad I did because it’s perfect for work.  Yes, it’s leopard print but again pairing a statement piece with a simple outfit makes it not so overwhelming.

I paired this with a plain black tank underneath, a pair of dark skinny jeans, and dark brown flats.  I almost put on some jewelry but decided the leopard print cardigan was enough on its own.  I also like it zips rather than buttons.

This is another piece that was on the chopping block but is now back in the regular rotation.  The ladies in the office loved this one.  I feel like I’m starting to find my style at work.  I worry I’m a bit too dressy sometimes but I’m not going out in the field yet so I feel like I should take advantage of that and dress up sometimes while I still can because I’m sure in a few months I’ll be doing more at work so it’ll be more jeans than dress pants.

I actually asked my boss for more work today….not sure if that was the best idea, ha ha XD however, I’m happy to really start digging into this new job but I’ll have more about that in another post.

Hope everyone is having a great week!  I’m so happy it’s Friday!!!  (Okay, it’s still Thursday but it’s late enough in the day I’m saying it’s Friday 😉  )

Working Wardrobe Wednesday

Not many pictures this week.  The couple I did take were terrible so they have been deleted off my phone never to be seen again but I will have more pictures next week.

This weekend I added a pair of gray slacks to my wardrobe rotation plus found a pair of jeans I’ll pick up once I have some money.  I was ecstatic to fit into size 18’s.  The last pair of pants I bought I grabbed a size 20 but ended up in an 18 but some part of me thought it was just a fluke so when I grabbed the 18’s and they fit I was so happy.  😀

I did have to hem them because every other woman is at least 4 inches taller than me so I’ve learned to sew.  The seams aren’t perfect but I did manage to get even hems on both legs….seems like a given but it doesn’t always turn out this way. I’ve had some pretty hideous hems before so this is a significant improvement.

As I ease my way back into the workforce I’m finding the more prep I do (meal plans, weekly schedules, etc.) on the weekends the easier it makes life during the week.  Sometimes at the end of the day even the simplest thing seems like a major ordeal.  The last thing I want to do at night is pick out clothes for the next day and I definitely don’t want to wait until the morning because I have things I would rather do than spend 30 minutes trying on clothes.

This week to help myself I picked my work clothes for the whole week on Sunday. I put together outfits and moved these clothes to a different part of the closet.  One thing I did learn from doing this is I need to find more color for my wardrobe.  Most of my work tops are black or gray so when I shop I’m going to look for more colored tops to go with all the neutral pants I have in my wardrobe.

It’s 2 pairs of slacks, khakis and gray, 4 tops and a blazer, although I did swap out the blazer for a cardigan because the orientation ended up being more casual than I anticipated.  It was an easy trade.  Just like my meal plans I’m not locked into anything but at least narrowing down my options helps me feel less overwhelmed by choices.  IMG_9568

I overheard a young girl in the dressing rooms at Target telling her mom she “didn’t get very many clothes” but the mom reminded her daughter of the different outfits she could make with those few pieces and that it’s important to have pieces that go together in different combinations.

Bravo to that advice!

I think too many people think they need more clothes to have a complete wardrobe but from my own experience less is more, except when it comes to shoes….but maybe that’s just me 😉
