A Lengthy Update

I’ll start with the bad news:  I’m frustrated.

I’m frustrated because I still feel like my body gets more sore than it should be, which makes it more challenging to push myself.  I’m frustrated because I’m not really losing any weight.  I’m frustrated because some days I feel like I’m not making progress.

The good news:  I’m working on being realistic, accepting my own progress, and not comparing myself to everyone else.

“I’ve lost 7 pounds”  “I’ve lost 10 pounds” “Do you want to try these diet pills?”  “What are you eating?”  “I’ve cut my calorie intake in half.”  “I’m going to the gym twice a day”

These are phrases I’m hearing around my office because we are in the midst of a Biggest Loser Challenge, a challenge that I’ve already accepted I will not be winning.  If they do it again I probably won’t participate because some people have been acting a little crazy.

After one week people began talking about losing anywhere from 7-12 pounds….in one week, which made my 3 pounds seem pretty insignificant.

In the second week I had a coworker get upset with me over nothing then later apologized claiming she was hungry….seriously?  Someone throw that girl a Snickers, lol.

She also offered me diet pills earlier that day and told me she cut her calories to 1200 a day plus was working out twice a day 😮  I didn’t think it seemed like a good combination.

I really just wanted to participate for a little bit of competition and a little bit of encouragement.  Unfortunately, some people have taken it to mean do whatever it takes in the short term to lose the most weight rather than changing habits for long term change.  I think encouraging healthy eating habits in the office is a good thing but when it starts becoming who can lose the most weight no matter what it begins to have the opposite effect.

On the bright side, my habits are improving.

I’m continuing to learn more things that help keep me on track.  One of the biggest things for me is keeping healthy food in the house and prepping as much as possible.  Cutting up veggies.  Planning meals.  Buying healthy foods.  Trying new things.  I marinated a couple chicken breasts in Greek yogurt and Mediterranean seasoning yesterday, and it came out amazing!

This also helps me to eat healthy at work.  In the last 2 weeks I’ve eaten out once during the work week, which is really good for me.  I believe the habits are starting to stick.  It’s part of my nightly routine to prep my lunch and make sure I have a couple snacks for the next day.

The other part of the nightly routine is packing gym clothes because I try to go the gym at least 4 days a week.  I raised my step goal to 11,000 steps a day.  I hit that goal every day last week and so far for today I have 18,000 steps!  I’ve gone from walking/jogging 1.5-2.0 miles on the treadmill to 2.5-3.0 miles.  I was going to try a couch to 10K training app but didn’t enjoy it so now I just jog when I feel like it and I’m starting to jog a little more each week.

The only thing I need to work on now is sleeping!  My bed time needs to be enforced because staying up until after 11PM each night doesn’t work when you’re getting up at 5AM.  I’ve got to finish up dinner and get to bed.

Weekend Wrap up

Last week I walked 79,127 steps.

That’s 32.96 miles.

I went to the gym 4 days last week.

I had 271 active minutes. (Periods of moderate activity for 10 min. or more)

I came in 5th in the Workweek Hustle Challenge but I had 11,477 more steps than the previous week and I only missed 4th place by 35 steps.

By the time I arrived home on Friday night I was feeling it a little bit.  My feet and legs were sore plus I just felt tired.  I almost cancelled my plans for Saturday but a good night’s sleep and a few cups of coffee had me ready to go.

A friend and I went to a Farmers Market in her town.  It was tiny with only about 6-7 booths, definitely not the sprawling event I was expecting but we checked it out then walked down by the waterfront to get in some steps.  The weather said rain but the sun stayed out and it ended up being a nice day to be outside.

We took a trip to Costco and as an employee she gets free memberships for a certain number of people, so I was selected as one of those people.  Yay!  I picked up a few things yesterday but plan to go on a field trip during the week just to see what’s available and what items would be good for me to buy in bulk.  When you’re single buying in bulk seems overwhelming but some items it makes sense plus many perishables can be frozen.

I’m working on my meal plan for this next week and plan to have that post up tomorrow night.  Pasta salads are what I’m craving so I bought some ingredients and I’m going to be experimenting.

Hope everyone had a lovely weekend!  As usual, I feel like it went by way too fast but I’m ready to start the week.  The sooner we get into it the sooner we’re back to the weekend! 😉   I’m off to enjoy watching the Tony’s.  I love musicals and with James Corden hosting it should be a great show.

Get Moving!

I woke up this morning feeling discouraged.

I sometimes struggle with inflammation in the cartilage in my chest.  It’s called costochondritis.  I may or may not have wrote about it before but it basically causes me to have chest pains that make me think I’m having a heart attack without any other symptoms.  It’s not fun and still scares me when it gets bad.  I discovered I had it when I went to the doctor years ago thinking I was having a heart attack.

Thankfully an EKG and a visit to a cardiologist cleared up all my concerns and confirmed the diagnosis.  Most of the time it’s not a problem but sometimes when I overdo it or perhaps begin an exercise program after not having worked out consistently for a few months it flairs up.  This morning was bad to the point I almost called in sick but knew we were short handed so I iced and ate some ibuprofen.

I survived and will do more ice tonight in an attempt to avoid pain tomorrow because I did go to the gym after work.  I skipped any strength training I had planned and just did some cardio, which leads to the good news….

I’ve met my step goal 3 days this week, even on trivia Tuesday I was able to get in 10,000 steps.  It meant pacing in my apartment for 30 minutes after I got home but I met my goal 😀IMG_2836

Gym days I’m getting in 12,000 steps.  I still can’t catch up to a couple of competitors in the Workweek Hustle Challenge but I’m climbing the ranks.  I’ve been consistently in the bottom 2 and this week I’m in 3rd but need another day to catch up to the top 2 who are about 9,000 steps ahead of me.

Have I mentioned how good it feels to be back in the gym?

I’ve surprised myself with how much I enjoy this new routine.  Get off work, go to gym, go home, make dinner.  Sounds a little boring but I love going to the gym after work.  I think it’s because I’ve never had that regular schedule that made it easy so now that I do I feel like I have to take full advantage of it.  I feel excited about the gym again and enjoy leaving work saying, “I’ve got to get to the gym.”

It might sound like a vanity thing but honestly the more people I tell the more I feel accountable.

I can’t tell people I’m going to the gym then not go….well, I can but I wouldn’t feel right about it plus as I said above I’m actually enjoying the gym.  Not only do I feel a sense of accomplishment but 45 minutes on the treadmill watching Judge Judy and the news while listening to loud rap music is a tension release for me.

This was my step count then I talked on the phone with my mom for an hour while pacing so I’ll be ending the day over 15,000 steps and 6.2 miles, not too shabby 😉  IMG_2837A guy in my office also bought a FitBit so now we can challenge each other.  My mom is also into the step challenges and has met her goal for 22 days in a row!  Go Mom!  It’s nice to find people who have similar goals.  Our goals all vary but the core component to all our goals is to GET MOVING!  Pick a goal and find ways to walk more in the day.  I’m hoping to move my goal to 12,000 steps in a couple weeks but I’m trying not to rush and have to remember to take it one day at a time.
