Doesn’t Hurt to Ask

Something I’m not very good at:  Saving money.

Something I’m working on:  Saving money.

It’s just a struggle for me but like any struggle I recognize it and work on it with the hopes that in the future it’s less of a struggle for me.

I am doing much better.  The more I focus on it and make myself face the realities of my budget the more I find myself improving my financial situation.  I’m usually counting down the days to payday but this week I didn’t even realize it was coming up so soon..that’s a good sign for me.  It means I’m inching myself away from living paycheck to paycheck.

I definitely don’t have it all figured out but I’m making significant progress.

All my bills seem to fall right around the same time of the month.  Rent is of course due on the 1st then a slew of bills seem to come in with due dates around the same time but a week or so before the next check comes in.  I did some research this morning and found a solution.

I called to see if I could change the billing cycle on a few cards.  It was super easy.  Each call took less than 5 minutes.  I discovered most card companies will change your due date once in a 12 month period but you have to pick up the phone and ask.  I thought of it a couple months ago but didn’t think it would actually be possible.  My cell phone company said no but there was a reason for it and I’ll be able to change it in the future.  I guess the lesson learned is, it doesn’t hurt to ask.

I definitely feel a sense of accomplishment getting that taken care of this morning.

I’m still working on budgeting.  This week I’m going out for brunch tomorrow so I’m going to skip dinner at Trivia night on Tuesday.  I have the time so I’ll just eat dinner before I go.  I bought some groceries without a list yesterday, which was not a good idea.  I ended up missing a few things and going a bit over budget so I plan to spend $10 or less to pick up a couple items then that’s it for the week.

Today I kept myself home to do the grown up things I’ve been avoiding like filing paperwork, cleaning, laundry, etc, all the boring stuff I ignore during the week because I’m too “busy” and “tired” In reality I’m just “procrastinating” and “being lazy”

I finished most of what I needed to this morning so now I can enjoy a laid back afternoon.

Hope everyone is having a great weekend!  😀

Coupons and Stocking Up

My weekend budget was $20 but unfortunately my plans ended up being laying on the couch feeling miserable so I spent my weekend budget on medicine, cat food, toilet paper, and a few groceries.  I also picked up mascara because I had a coupon and mascara is in my necessities category (don’t judge).  I don’t think I’ll ever be a crazy coupon lady but I find myself using coupons more and more often.

I used to throw away the coupon pages I get in the mail but now I find myself perusing the ads for items I buy or items I will use.

I don’t have any interest in spending hours each week couponing but I have respect for the people who do it successfully to buy items they need or will use.  I’ve watched some of the crazy couponing shows and think it’s great that you can buy 30 packages of diapers for pennies but if you don’t have any kids or plan to donate them then…why?

One of the keys to discount shopping, bulk shopping, or using coupons is buying items you regularly buy or items you will use.

Don’t fall into the “it’s a good deal” trap.

I’ve said it before if it’s something you won’t use it’s not a good deal.  Coupons and discounts can be great for stocking up.  I’m not out of mascara yet but when I do it’ll be nice to have one on hand.  It’ll be extra nice to have the kind I like and know I paid only $3 instead of $6 because I used a coupon.  I’m going to keep clipping my coupons.

I used to struggle with remembering to use the coupons because I was impulse buying.  Now I’m planning my shopping trips so I have coupons ready to go for items I plan to buy.  I clip the coupons and set them aside in one of two envelopes, one for groceries and one for miscellaneous (usually beauty products, shampoo, makeup, etc.).  When I plan my list I check my coupons and so far it’s working out.  I used to think it wasn’t enough to be worth the effort but 50 cents or $1 off makes a difference in the long run.

I’m also really close to many of the major stores for groceries.  I have Winco, Walmart, Safeway, Grocery Outlet, Trader Joes, Target, and Costco all within a 5 mile radius so I’m going to be working on more comparison shopping for my groceries.  It means a little more planning but it’s worth it to save money, especially on meats and produce.

This part of the month is always the biggest struggle for me but I know after putting gas in the car I shouldn’t need to buy anything else this week.  This is the between paychecks time so I have money “left over” so I feel the need to either spend it or pay more on one of my bills.  Yesterday I wanted to pay more on one of my credit cards but I reminded myself I already paid them for the month.  Rent eats up the majority of my next check so it’s important for me to set some aside from this check.

I have to stick to the The Plan.  I have to trust and believe in my budget.  Right now I feel like I’m on the right track but I also know I’m quickly led astray by the temptations of shopping

This is how I envision my shopping trips…

But I know this is the reality…..

…so I must focus.  In the moment it’s fun but then the bills roll in.  I received an email from Old Navy about free shipping and great deals in store.  I was tempted for a minute and I do have a $10 gift certificate….but no!  I’m staying strong so I can be rich…6356878958897990211245000294_url

Okay maybe this is more realistic….anigif_enhanced-buzz-9660-1389711218-5

Have a great Sunday 😉

The Plan

A new year always seems to inspire change and I’m definitely feeling the inspiration.  My inspiration for change comes from facing some harsh realities and being honest with myself.

My perception of my financial situation:tumblr_inline_nb3x4gsfsa1s4672p1

Reality:  I’m spending too much money and  using credit to fill in the gaps.

As I began google searching “how painful is plasma donation” and “how to donate an egg” I realized I was heading down a dark road.  When I begin contemplating selling off parts of myself it’s time a serious reality check, which is what I had this morning.

What better time than the first of the year to have a serious conversation with yourself?

I dug through a folder labeled “Mom” (a good place to start when looking for words of wisdom) looking for a simple handmade booklet titled “The Plan” and I found it.

Over a decade ago I went through some very serious financial struggles, bouncing checks, overspending, and basically ignoring the problem.  I had a drawer of unpaid bills, maxed out credit cards, an eviction notice, and an insane amount of stress.  My mom came to the rescue but going through the drawer with her was like this

After that terrifying reality check my mom gave me The Plan.  I’m not hiding bills in a drawer and nothing is overdue.  Part of it is moving and starting a new job in a new field left me making half the money but paying twice as much in expenses.  3a37ef7971fddd0fff064112524879d5eedf404b9a660548e4aebb1e6a37f7bd

I need to get a serious grasp on my finances and create a budget, so I grab “The Plan”IMG_0978 (1)*Typo-give up self-indulgence

“First thing–you have to face your debt…”

“Stop using any credit cards-now”

I grabbed my wallet and pulled out the credit cards.  I keep an in case of emergency card and the rest go away.

“Gather all your bills together.  From the bills add all minimum payments (don’t focus on the balances now just look at the minimum payment required).  Don’t forget to include payments which you might not have statements for, rent, etc.”

This morning I wrote out a list of all the bills I pay each month, the amount of the payment, and when the bill is due.  I added everything together to find the amount of my monthly expenses.

“Calculate your monthly income”

Done.

“If your income equaled more than monthly expense and yet the bills are still not getting paid-you need the plan.
If your income is less than your monthly expenses-you really need the plan.”

Monthly income-Monthly expenses=Left over money……

…I need the plan.

The next step involves writing down when the bills are due and dividing the list of bills between paychecks.  I get paid twice per month so I split my bills between those two checks.  If you have to, prioritize what needs paid the full amount right away, basic needs come first, shelter, heat, food.

“If you have to pay less than the minimum make some phone calls and set up payments.  Do not skip payments-if all you have is $5 or $10-send it in, a small payment is better than no payment.”

This is important.  Most companies are willing to work with you but you have to communicate with them otherwise they think you’re just avoiding paying off your bill.

Now that I’ve figured out my monthly bills and income I know how much money I have “left over” each month.  This money goes toward the rest of the expenses I didn’t include with my bills:  grocery, cat, car, entertainment.  Those are my main expenses.

The “left over” money is not a significant amount but it’s enough.  Enough to buy gas, food, cat food, even have some money to go out every once in a while, and for savings.

“Start a savings account as soon as possible-save a little each payday-even if it’s $5-it will over time add up.”

One of the components that made me so successful last time I did this was I used ONLY cash for my weekly budget.  I quit carrying my debit card with me all the time and I’m going to do this again for a while until things are back under control.  Once the cash was gone I was done spending for the week.  If I budgeted $20 and spent $10 eating out, $5 on coffee, then I might only have $5 to buy gas for my car.  It significantly cut down on my impulse spending.

A few more tips from the original plan

“Remember what’s important and where you want to be in a few years.”
“Try keeping your spending money in an envelope-write on the outside exactly what the money is for.”
“A dollar spent here and there will destroy your budget.”

The Plan is not overly complicated.  It’s nothing new.  It’s not a revolutionary expense plan.  It’s like my meal plans, simple, easy to follow, something that works for me and might work for other people.

I’ll be sharing more tips and tricks for managing a budget as I move forward with “The Plan”

Reflecting back on last year I had so many major changes and I’m proud of my accomplishments but I also recognize some back slide on some of the progress I made when I wasn’t working so I’ll be having a couple more reality check posts.  If I want to be successful in my goals for the next year, read about those here, I have to be honest with myself and make plans.

Happy New Year!!  Not to be too cliche but I’m excited to be in 2016 and look forward to making it an amazing year!
